Dear CommUnity:

The Unity College SAR team returned safely to campus this afternoon after assisting the Maine Warden's Service to look for a man missing in the woods north of Greenville since Monday.

The elderly gentleman they were looking for was, unhappily, found dead after several hours and miles of searching. It will however, be some small comfort to his family that he has been found.

We fielded 11 personnel. This is a very good response for a weekend call out. All students performed well under the leadership of their own officers (without any faculty or staff supervision), on an arduous operation, at short notice, and a long way from campus.

I hope you agree with me that they are a credit to the college.

Sincerely,

Mick

Five college personnel responded. Public Safety officer Chris Miville provided assistance with vehicles, etc. The missing woman was found at first light by authorities. The team returned to UC by 9.20 am.

Although our numbers were low, we did perform our mission of getting to the Search HQ with sufficient trained, fit personnel and equipment, ready to assist the authorities with a search or a rescue.

Archived posts: note to readers

The call out reports are archived below. They are not in the correct chronological order. Use the menu at the right to skip to a specific incident. My records go back to 2000, when I first became faculty mentor to the SAR team, but my computer has changed a number of times since then, and my older computers are not as easily compatible with this one. New reports will be posted in order of the most recent call-out.

South Portland Search, Monday Oct 17, 2005

Colleagues,

The Unity College SAR team received an alert yesterday evening from the Maine Warden's Service and MASAR duty officer for an SAR call-out to South Portland for a suburban search for a missing 25 year old female. The team responded with 25 students in one college van and a number of student vehicles. A newspaper account detailing the reasons for the search is available at http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/local/051018missing.shtml

This is the largest team we have fielded in my five years of advising this activity here at the college and matches the best performance of any team I have been involved in in my twenty years of SAR. The list of students responding is at the end of this message.

The Unity College SAR team's mission is to provide emergency SAR services in the form of trained, led, equiped and disciplined personnel to the State of Maine and the Maine Warden's Service. This mssion is in line with the college's mission of preparing effective leaders and responsible citizens through active learning. Students are not excused from classes for call-outs and are responsible for assignments, but as Faculty Advisor to the team, I ask faculty members to exercise their good judgement and appropriate leniency in this respect. (They may not be learning what you had in mind, but they are learning.)

Over the weekend, Saturday October 15th, at 4.30 am, the team received an alert from the Maine Wardens Service and MASAR duty officer to proceed with available personnel to Carratunk for a search for two missing females, each 60 years old, missing overnight during the storm and floods, in the area of Pleasant Pond. The team responded with 15 members including one faculty member. On arrival at the search HQ the missing women were found safe by the Warden's service having spent the night in the woods. The team returned to base with no incident. This was also a good response. In getting the trained, equipped, led, disciplined personnel to the incident ready to work, we also fulfilled our mission.

The list of students responding to today's call-out is as follows:

Jeff Hunter (SAR Chief)
Gemma Vanderheld
Jeff Ruckert
Matt Gorevan
Dan Hillier
Richard Russ
Chad Johnston
Alex Johnston
Meghan Fenton
Greg Gallagher
Robert Curler
Andrew LeClerc
Patrick Robinson
Mike Dodge
Meghan Bursey
Tom Duym
Andrew Durgin
Ryan Dinsmore
Jeff Stebbins
Justin Blouin
Craig Oster

Meg Bursey (Captain)
William Calkins

Wayne Vetre
Ryan Rochelle
Toby Wright

Unity College, and an important part of many careers in PRE, CLE, AEL, AT,
and so on. Please consider excusing these students from your classes for the
very hard work they will likely do today.
